Keying has a long history, with many different technical advances that each had their own optimal solutions. For dvMatte, and most modern color difference keyers, here are the main areas to focus on:

Use Digital Green or Digital Blue Indoors: The modern Digital Green colors have more separation between the green coloration and the blue and red coloration than the older, darker ‘Chroma-Key Green’ or ‘Chroma-Key Blue’ colors. Since the basic matte is calculated by subtracting the blue/red average from the green value, it helps to maximize this amount as much as possible.

These should be mounted on a frame and tensioned to avoid wrinkles.

In outdoor lighting conditions, where the main problem is keeping the blue or green channel from clipping, the older and darker chroma key green or chroma key blue colors can be useful.
