Precision Mapping
The single most sensitive parameter in matching CG and live action shots is the lens calibration. It’s also the single most difficult to achieve. Modern cine zoom lenses have an infinite range of zoom and focus combinations, all of which must be exactly and precisely matched.
Previzion’s breakthrough, on-stage lens mapping technique enables a complete mapping of a modern zoom lens in a matter of hours. Lens breathing, entry pupil location, and varying distortion are all measured and accounted for. Previzion even adds background distortion in real time to the rendered CG world!
Since the system is portable, lens mapping can be done on site at a camera rental facility, with no need to keep a stage hot. Lens calibration parameters are stored in a lens calibration file for later use – each lens needs to be calibrated only once, before the start of production.
Invisible Data Collection
Previzion acquires lens data with the best kind of device – one that is already on the camera. With seamless integration to the Preston remote lens control systems, as well as a direct data connection to Fujinon encoded lenses, Previzion measures exact lens barrel position in real time, and correlates the barrel position to the precise lens parameters recorded during calibration.
Complete Data Transfer
During each take, complete lens data is recorded on a frame-by-frame basis matched to timecode into a Collada ASCII text file. Lightcraft’s Take Converter program can then be used to extract selected frames from existing takes, and convert them into formats compatible with standard post production tools like Maya, Nuke, After Effects, and XSI.
